little cato - detailed history

The Basics: Little Cato is now part of a ragtag crew of criminals, outcasts, and oddballs, who have been drawn together against Lord Commander and the cosmic evils he's allied with. They've tried to stop the threat of "Final Space," the very last realm of existence where spacetime goes to decay and die, the place where the evil eldritch giants, the Titans, and a giant cosmic Big Bad named Invictus dwell.

The Detailed Version: Little Cato is from a rough and tumble sci fi future. Originally born the Crown Prince of the planet Ventrexia, Avocato, the royal family's trusted general, shot down the king and queen's ship on the command of the Lord Commander, an interplanetary dictator who promised Avocato he'd bring an end to suffering in the galaxy through his control. Avocato found baby Little Cato as the lone survivor in the wreckage, and reminded of a son he lost in the war, raised him as his own, never telling him the truth of his origins.

Now the genocidal general of Lord Commander, Avocato raised Little Cato partly on Ventrexia, and later on Tera Con Prime, the fractured planet base that served as Lord Commander's center of power. While his father could be loving in many ways, Cato was raised with the skills of a soldier and raised to be a leader, in keeping with with their war-like Ventrexian heritage and the rigid and violent dictatorship run by Lord Commander. He grew up on a world where people were sometimes casually executed in the street for not having their identification.

3 years before canon, Lord Commander demanded his generals kill their firstborn as a sign of loyalty, and he expected Avocato to finish the murder of the royal family that he started. Little Cato watched the other children get executed around him but Avocato refused to kill his adopted son, attacking the guards and Lord Commander instead to try to save him. Lord Commander stopped him, however, and imprisoned Little Cato as a hostage to control Avocato and use him as a bounty hunter. Little Cato was trapped this way for 3 years, suffering occasional verbal and physical abuse from Lord Commander and his right hand, Viro.

Season 1

Petty criminal Gary Goodspeed was serving a prison sentence in a sentient ship after impersonating an Infinity Guard officer and accidentally destroying a bunch of Infinity Guard ships when he discovered and befriended a strange, vastly powerful, floating alien that he named Mooncake. Lord Commander had been seeking Mooncake to use him to open a portal to Final Space, a place where spacetime goes to die, where the cosmic monsters he'd allied himself with were (the eldritch being Invictus and Its Titans), as they'd promised to give him power and immortal life. Lord Commander sent Avocato after Mooncake and Gary befriended him. With the help of former Infinity Guard officer Quinn Ergon, Gary helped Avocato free his son. Lord Commander had one last nasty trick in store, though, and as the group escaped, he telekinetically attached an explosive mine to Little Cato's back. His father discovered it when it activated. After beseeching Gary to take care of his son, Avocato ran to the opposite end of the cargo bay, diving on the explosive to prevent it from killing his son and friends, and then fell through the hole in the ship to his death.

After Avocato died, Gary took care of Little Cato, during a time that Little Cato sought vengeance against Lord Commander. An alternate future version of Quinn, Nightfall, showed up to help the group gel together, introducing them to Bolo, the only good Titan, who had been trapped by the others. Bolo used his power to transport Gary to the past, so that he learned the mission that killed his Infinity Guard father, John, had been the result of John closing a dimensional breach to Final Space. John told them how to close a breach that was forming in their time and the rest of the group learned how Gary lost his father. Since it was was clear they had bonded enough to have a chance to fight the Titans, Nightfall left them.

Joined by Quinn's fellow Infinity Guard member Tribore, the crew tried to close a breach in space that was swallowing the Earth into Final Space. They failed to close it in time and Earth was pulled through the breach by a Titan just before the breach closed with Quinn trapped on the other side. In the chaos of the battle, Nightfall killed Lord Commander but Invictus drew his body away to Final Space to regenerate him.

The group was separated by the chaos of the wrecked space battlefield with some the survivors running out of oxygen in their space suits.

Season 2

After being separated in the chaos of the battle, the remaining crew reunited, picked up as slaves among the salvage by con artist businessman Clarence. They were joined again by Nightfall, and fell in with Clarence and his adopted children Fox and Ash, fighting over ownership of Clarence's ship, the Crimson Light, which he lied about offering to Gary and co if they helped him run a heist during a race. Little Cato butted heads with Fox due to their species having been at war for 1000 years but gradually became friends. He also became very close friends with the traumatized Ash, bonding over similar traumatic pasts, enough that even during her darkest time in season 3 she still saw him as the last person that truly cared about her before losing her mind.

They sought dimensional keys to free the only good Titan, Bolo, who had been imprisoned by the others, fighting for the keys or stealing them from various places. Bolo was willing to help them get to Final Space to save Quinn and also bring the fight to the Titans and Invictus, as their clawing at the edges of reality meant eventual invasion into normal space was inevitable.

During the hunt, Little Cato was trapped in a time shard after he ran the ship into a time anomaly, and was forced to live 60 years in what was only minutes to the other side of the ship. This time alone drove him insane and he spent most of his days hallucinating the crew was with him. Reversal of the shard brought his sanity back and made him 14 again but he still carried those decades with him. Though his mind thought like a 14-year-old again he remembered the pain of that time alone and buried it. Unaired dialogue implies that Ash comforted him nights that he woke up screaming thinking he was trapped alone again, with the adults aware of the time he spent there but not the depth of the trauma.

Through time travel they were able to save Avocato, but he lost his memory for a time, hurting Little Cato's feelings. Then, after he got it back, Avocato was possessed by Invictus, forcing Little Cato to shoot him to save Gary after Avocato shot him. For a time, Little Cato thought he had killed his father a second time.

Little Cato then left the crew, feeling he didn't belong, and tried to join a bounty hunter group but when his first bounty turned out to be Gary, he couldn't turn on his old friend. Gary then offered to adopt Little Cato and be another father to him, to provide stability, not to replace Avocato but to be a "vice dad" or backup dad when he needed one. This drew Little Cato back to the crew.

Eventually the group ran afoul of Todd H. Watson, a human survivor of Earth who lost his wife and child when Earth was lost through the breach and blamed Gary for it. They also ran afoul of Sheryl, Gary's mother who had abandoned him after the death of his father, who had been a secret agent of a criminal group and assassin. She was also collecting dimensional keys because one of the evil Titans promised to bring her dead husband back and lied that Bolo was evil. They ultimately defeated her and her allies. Sheryl was confronted with the life she could have had as Gary's mother and realized he was the embodiment of her and her lost husband's love, then decided to join the crew and help them. Avocato was freed from his possession and Nightfall freed Bolo by sacrificing herself as the last dimensional key, devastating the group.

With Bolo's help, they entered Final Space to save Quinn and fight the monsters there before they could break into normal space. If Invictus broke through, after devastating their universe, It could destroy life in every timeline.

Season 3

The crew lost the Crimson Light and its AI Ava. They had adventures in Final Space, saving Quinn, and finding the displaced, dead Earth, but failing against the Titans, a revived Lord Commander, and Invictus. Since many iterations of Gary in many timelines had sacrificed themselves to close their respective timelines' breach to Final Space, Invictus was able to animate their many corpses as zombies to fight the group. Bolo's planet-crushing fight with another Titan got the crew separated and they had to find each other again. Little Cato learned Avocato had killed the king and queen of Ventrexia but what he and Lord Commander didn't tell him was that he was the crown prince and that Avocato had found him in the wreckage of the king and queen's ship, then raised him as his own.

Fox had his soul ripped away by Invictus and Invictus started manipulating Ash, working on her sanity and trust of others.

Lord Commander managed to ascend and merge with a natal Titan incubating in the dead Earth's core, killing Bolo after. The group managed to get a new ship and a gate back to normal space operational and ultimately gave up on their task due to being overwhelmed and realizing they couldn't beat Invictus and the Titans, since every dead Earth in Final Space contained a natal Titan. All of them except for Quinn, who they managed to find a cure for, became ill with Final Space poisoning from their time there, a disease that ravages people due to corrupted spacetime. This ticking clock meant they needed to get a gate home working before the poisoning killed them.

Fox was possessed to manipulate Ash, and Gary's sword arm was forcibly popped to make it look as if he killed Fox, emotionally isolating Ash from the crew. They then gave Fox a funeral and a space burial with Cato giving a tearful eulogy for his friend.

After finding out Avocato killed Little Cato's parents and raised him and that Gary knew as well, Ash believed the crew was evil and turned on them, kidnapping Little Cato to Invictus' lair to try to convince him to join her and Invictus as she saw him as the only innocent and the only one left that actually cared about her. Despite being devastated to learn the truth about his father and caring about Ash, Cato refused because Invictus was terrifying and wanted to destroy everything.

Cato was even more devastated to hear Avocato confirm what he did but let himself get rescued by his two adoptive fathers and their ship's AI HUE. Lord Commander also attacked but was put in a similar prison to Bolo by Invictus.

The crew managed to escape to normal space by the skin of their teeth but the threat of cosmic annihilation was now looming, as Ash captured and damaged Mooncake during the escape to use his power to open a portal for Invictus and the Titans to invade their universe.

The crew could only watch as reality ripped open and Invictus broke through. Once their world is conquered, then Invictus and the Titans will take the multiverse.
